چکیده

Transportation is a key part of the global economy. It allows for the free movement of people and goods. Transportation emits 27% of American greenhouse gas emissions and 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is currently almost exclusively based on fossil fuels. As the rest of the world starts to demand the same standard of living as the United States the global impact of emissions due to transportation will rise. In order to limit the environmental impact of transportation new technologies for propulsion and power generation must be considered, such as hydrogen or electricity based technologies. This paper provides a literature review of different technologies on transportation propulsion system’s carbon dioxide performance and an outline of a further analysis. The goal would be to determine the environmental impact and cost of the different transportation technologies. Three categories of technologies for transportation were investigated: hydrocarbons, electricity, and hydrogen. For each technology CO2 emissions on a well to wheel basis will be analized. This involves analyzing the lifetime of each technology (distance or time), the CO2 produced in manufacturing, the CO2 produced during running, and the CO2 produced in the fuel extraction and transportation process. Within each category potential technologies that could feasibly be implemented will be analyzed.

Sharing global CO2 emission reductions among one billion high emitters.

We present a framework for allocating a global carbon reduction target among nations, in which the concept of "common but differentiated responsibilities" refers to the emissions of individuals instead of nations. We use the income distribution of a country to estimate how its fossil fuel CO(2) emissions are distributed among its citizens, from which we build up a global CO(2) distribution. We ...

Wedge decomposition analysis: Application to SRES and Post-SRES Scenarios

We introduce a general methodology for displaying the gross assumptions behind any carbon emissions trajectory, relative to a reference trajectory, and we apply this methodology to a limited number of IPCC SRES scenarios [1]. These scenarios have been used widely for climate change analysis. We examine four scenarios (A1B, A2, B1, B2) together with three paired “post-SRES” scenarios [2, 3] that...

A plan to keep carbon in check.

Retreating glaciers, stronger hurricanes, hotter summers, thinner polar bears: the ominous harbingers of global warming are driving companies and governments to work toward an unprecedented change in the historical pattern of fossil-fuel use. Faster and faster, year after year for two centuries, human beings have been transferring carbon to the atmosphere from below the surface of the earth. To...

Stabilization wedges: solving the climate problem for the next 50 years with current technologies.

Humanity already possesses the fundamental scientific, technical, and industrial know-how to solve the carbon and climate problem for the next half-century. A portfolio of technologies now exists to meet the world's energy needs over the next 50 years and limit atmospheric CO2 to a trajectory that avoids a doubling of the preindustrial concentration. Every element in this portfolio has passed b...

Integrated waste management as a climate change stabilization wedge.

Anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gas emissions are known to contribute to global increases in greenhouse gas concentrations and are widely believed to contribute to climate change. A reference carbon dioxide concentration of 383 ppm for 2007 is projected to increase to a nominal 500 ppm in less than 50 years according to business as usual models. This concentration change is equivalent to an...
